Picture Book
Most picture books I read growing up and still have in my house today have been coveted items and hallmarks of imagination since my parents were kids. They are valuable glimpses into my parents’ pasts- why my dad is so eloquent and my mom is such a visionary. My family is made up of educators, so reading and creative expression have always been a part of us.
I remember every night spent on my dad’s lap in my first bedroom, listening as he recited “Mother Goose” nursery rhymes, captivated by every colorful image. My favorite picture with my grandma is of me giggling as she tickles me while reading “The Poky Little Puppy."
These books travelled with my family as they grew up and moved around the world, attending school in Texas, teaching in Australia, raising kids in Oklahoma, or moving to Pennsylvania. When my family moved to the UAE, our books were our favorite forms of entertainment and comfort as we settled.
Telling stories is how my family best connects with one another. The Busiest People Ever is the pinnacle of connection and nostalgia. No matter how juvenile, these books also hold many lessons, like how our actions matter or the importance of being a friend to others. I realize now how much my family embodies these lessons. I hope to keep these small pieces of my history for my future family members too.
