This is a copy of an engagement photo of my great aunt Jean from 1942. She had just met a Jewish solider, Sheldon Ellowitch, a few weeks earlier, at his base in Massachusetts. Since he was about to ship out to Europe, they were engaged and married within a few weeks. Sheldon probably took a copy of this photo with him while he served in North Africa, the invasion of Sicily, and D-Day. Presumably, it reminded him of why he wanted to return home, which he did. Jean died last year at the age of 95.
