The shalwar kameez in this photo shows the history of immigration in my family. In this 2006 photo she wore clothing from our house in Pakistan, and more than cloth in our new Brooklyn existence, it was a tangible part of her old life. In a new city with unfamiliar sounds and views, these habits were comforting and a subtle assertion of where we had come from. This garment is the private battle of immigration, but also brushes against the social issue of sustaining cultural heritage in a new land. Seeing it in this picture makes me realize that our foundation wasn't established in a new place, but was brought with us.
