Wilhelm Hollitscher by Hugo Dachinger

Wilhelm Hollitscher, my great-great-grandfather, an engineer, fled the Nazis fearing for his life. Shortly after, the repressive German government put him into a concentration camp. He befriended an artist, Hugo Dachinger, who painted this of him. The painting is now displayed at the Ben Uri Gallery & Museum located in London.
Hugo’s painting was bought in 2016 without any knowledge of its backstory. My great Aunt, Margaret Hodge, a member of parliament, spoke about the true significance of this painting. She explained that the painting was an important part of my family and our ancestry. She goes into detail about Hollitscher and his wife’s false sense of hope. His wife was killed. The last letter she wrote said, “Don’t forget me completely”. When Hodge found the painting our family attempted to buy it, hoping to bring back a piece of our history that will not be forgotten. They did not sell to us. However, because of the information my family had provided surrounding the painting they decided to give us high-quality copies of the painting. One member of each of my extended family has it hanging in their home, mine is located at the entrance as a way to remember what my family had to go through.
