In my family, the Scharfe and now Forsyth Family, coffee cake was always a big treat when I visited my grandparents in Babylon, New York on Long Island, where both my parents had grown up. My mom was from neighboring West Islip. We love Entenmann’s above all else and we would cut the crumb cake in long thin slices, almost as if that would make it last longer. One of my grandfather’s closest friends was an Entenmann’s baker. They were all of German descent, some were new to America and others were the children of immigrants like my grandparents, and big fans of all Entenmann’s treats but the coffee cake was our family staple. As much as I miss my grandparents and parents, there is definitely some comfort in a slice of crumb cake.
