I am a child of immigrants that was raised by her grandparents and do to us being Russian jews not religious we did not celebrate holidays like Christmas but we did celebrate New Year's as a tradition we would gift the Chinese zodiac of the new year for good luck and celebrate New years like a little of everything holiday because it was in between the American Christmas and Russian Christmas. New years would be celebrate like Christmas and new years combined having kids open their gifts as the time hit midnight. I have no idea how this tradition started but it is a fun one that I look forward too each year.
