Necklace
This gold necklace is my family crest. It is a Chinese dragon inside of an Irish clover. My grandfather, who we call Gung Gung, was an immigrant with his family from China to Jamaica. He moved to Jamaica when he was a teenager, and he and his family owned a bakery in a small town called Lucea. My grandmother, Bee, was working for the Peace Corps when she happened to stumble across Gung Gung in Jamaica, where they fell in love and got engaged 8 hours after meeting. My grandfather and his family left China because of the social climate. Women from my family would disappear, as they were being traded and sold. The island of Jamaica was already home to lots of Chinese immigrants. After emancipation, Chinese people were brought to Jamaica to work the sugar cane fields. However, over time people would immigrate from China to Jamaica in search of economic opportunities. While most of my family still resides in Jamaica, a large portion of my family immigrated to the United States from Jamaica. This move was sparked by even more economic opportunities. Gung Gung moved from Jamaica to Delaware, where he became a teacher and then a professor. He started his family with Bee, and the tradition of giving all his children and grandchildren the family crest necklace as they entered highschool.
