Growing up i only knew my grandfather on my mothers side and saw him frequently. But my grandfather on my dads side was a frequent smoker and alcoholic. My dad didnt want to expose me to him but still would tell me stories of my grandfather that let me know him better without ever seeing him. He would tell me stories of how honorably my grandfather served in the navy during the time of the cuban missile crisis. One of these stories that stuck to my memory the most was when my grandfather aided saving cuban refugees from almost certain suffering, helping them escape from cuba. These stories helped show how even though my grandfather had done things that kept me from seeing him, i could at least know the many good and honorable things my grandfather had accomplished.
