My name necklace
An artifact that is very important to me is my name necklace with “Emani” on it. It is a 22k gold necklace that means a lot to me because my older sister calls me Emani. It is also a nickname that many of my close friends and family use. My mom bought this necklace for me in Pakistan, which makes it even more special. I wear it every day and have worn it for four years. It has been through a lot with me and holds many memories. My necklace has traveled with me on three trips to Pakistan and has been with me at airports in Qatar, Kuwait, and Turkey. I wore it to my sister’s wedding and when I went to the hospital to see my nephew for the first time. These are important moments in my life, and my necklace was there with me.My name connects to my religion because Eman is an Arabic name associated with Islam and means belief and faith. The necklace also connects to my Pakistani and South Asian culture because gold is valued and significant in Pakistan. Gold is often worn for special occasions and is an important part of our traditions. My necklace represents my Muslim and Pakistani identity and reminds me of where I come from.Living in New York City has shown me that people come from many different backgrounds, cultures, and religions. My necklace reminds me of my roots while I live in such a diverse city. It connects to “We the People” because although everyone has their own identity and story, we are all part of one community. We are the people who make up New York City.
