My Great Grandmother’s Piano
My great grandmother lived through difficult times, experiencing both The Great Migration, and the Great Depression. She later discovered music at a shop in her neighborhood owned by a woman who gave her piano lessons- this began her passion for music. Over the span of her life, she learned to play the pipe organ, piano, guitar, and some percussion instruments. She also sang second soprano in her church choir. Her passion and talent greatly influenced future generations of her family. Her two children learned to play the piano which resulted in my great aunt becoming a jazz pianist. My grandmother would play Broadway tunes on the piano for my mom and aunts when they were children. My great grandmother eventually went on to teach my mother and her sisters how to play the piano. While my aunts were somewhat reluctant students, her love for music was instilled in my mother, and through her, my sisters and I were encouraged to study music since early childhood. Thus resulting in my older sisters playing the violin, and me playing the cello for the majority of our lives. When my great grandmother passed on, she left behind a piano that she used for teaching students when she lived in Little Rock, Arkansas. She kept this piano for the remainder of her life, and it has become a focal point in our living room, reminding us of the love she shared through her music and the legacy she leaves behind.
