My Grandmothers nurse ID
My object is my grandmother's work ID. My grandmother migrated from Jamaica West Indies, ending up in New York USA never to live in Jamaica again. Initially, when she left Jamaica at age 21 she went on the Queen Mary, a cruise ship, and ended up in NY on a vacation.
In 1954, she traveled to London, England to study nursing and midwifery. Upon completing her courses, she moved to Canada where she worked as a nurse for serval years. During this time, she met my grandfather on a blind date, an immigrant from Barbados who already lived in New York. Shortly after, she moved to NY and they were married.
Then she embarked on a forty-plus-year career path as a Registered Nurse in New York City. She would work in several hospitals including Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in Brooklyn for over 25 years as a head nurse.
My mom often speaks about growing up, as the kid of a nurse. For the most part, my grandmother's work hours were from 3 pm -11 pm and my mom remembers as a kid rarely having her mom around after school. This is partly why it was important for her to have a job where she would be there for me and my brother during after-school hours. My mom was proud of her mother though, of the brave hero she knew nurses were.
This object represents me because I want to major in biology when I'm in college. The job that I want to have helps others like what my grandmother did. She inspires me to want to help save lives and help others. This work ID means a lot because it is a symbol of how courageous my grandma was.
