Mink Pelt Trophy
Since before I was born our family has had a walleye competition at our cabin every year with the prize being 100 dollars but the whole competition changed on a summer day in 2016. It was a particularly sticky and hot day so either you were inside the cabin, on the boat, or jumping off the dock into the refreshingly cool water. My mom, my uncle and a few of my cousins were having a peaceful boat ride when they heard scratching at the side of the boat. My uncle looked over to the side and saw a long little rodent creature trying to climb up the side of the pontoon. My uncle immediately grabbed a paddle we kept on board and tried to shoo the mink away, but this just agitated it more and it finally got a hold of the boat and scurried on board. Everyone on the boat was screaming and climbing to the back. The mink was darting around trying to find a place to hide from my uncle who was now trying to smack it with the paddle. The mink got stuck, and my uncle swung the paddle and connected with the minks skull making a loud thump; he had killed it. They went back home and explained what happened to us and for some reason my uncle and my grandpa had the bright idea to skin it and turn it into a pelt. They went on the deck with my cousin and skinned it. They left it out and figured that it could be a new prize for the walleye competition so it would be something you can display, rather than just the money. To this day it is the most looked forward to day in our family: when we give out the mink on Christmas to whoever won that year. I haven't won yet but I hope I will this year.
