My mother immigrated from Puebla, Mexico to the United States in search of greater opportunities and a brighter future. She was only fifteen when she made the big decision to leave behind her hometown and the family she loved. It wasn't an easy choice to make, but she knew that life on the other side would bring something better. When she arrived to the U.S she spoke of the many unfamiliarities between her hometown and America. She had to learn a new language, adjust to a completely different culture, and work long hours at her young age. She had many moments of exhaustion and loneliness, but her determination to bring her parents and siblings to the other side kept her going. One object that tells the story of her journey is a Mexican peso. To many, it might just be a regular bill but to my mother this peso held memories of where she came from. It reminds her of the very life she had to leave behind and the strength and courage it took for her to start anew in a foreign country.
