Maiden’s Tower-Our historical and cultural monuments. A rare example of our national architecture. The Maiden’s Tower is one of the ancient historical symbols of the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, and a rare example of our national architecture. The monument is in the territory of the “Icherisheher” State Historical and Architectural Reserve. The height of this monument, which is in the form of a giant cylinder made of stone, is 28 meters from the north and 31 meters from the south. The thickness of the castle walls in the basic part reaches 5 meters and above the 8th floor it reaches 4 meters. The view of the Maiden’s Tower from above resembles the” buta” sign, which denotes the sun and fire and is widespread in Azerbaijan. The origin of the name relates to legends. According to legend, a girl who was kept in a castle by her brother, could not bear the torture and threw herself off the top of the castle and drowned in the waters of the Caspian Sea. Another legend is about a girl who was in love with the king and who made him a condition for building a castle in exchange for marriage. In December 2000, the Maiden Tower was included in the UNESCO Worl Heritage List.
