Lunar New Year Dragon
Lunar New Year is a holiday that my family, friends, and I celebrate each year. People all around the world observe Lunar New Year in many different ways. Some traditions include giving out red envelopes, eating dim-sum, throwing fire-crackers, cleaning your house, etc. Lunar New Year originated around 3,500 years ago. The legend is that a monster named Nian would attack people at the start of each year. He's frightened by loud noises and the color red. People don't want him to come back; therefore, they celebrate with loud dragon dances and wear red clothes. My object is a pink Lunar New Year dragon puppet which represents the dragons that bring good luck. Usually, we celebrate in Chinatown and eat at a famous dim-sum place. We also always throw firecrackers and use confetti poppers. It's very festive and the sidewalks and streets are filled with colorful confetti. My mom bought the dragon puppet for me about three years ago. I think that this object should go in a museum since it symbolizes a special tradition that people enjoy all around the world. Chinatown is a place where some immigrants can feel like they belong, and be able to share special events.
