love letters from WW2
This is a love letter written by my great grandfather. The letter was sent to my great grandmother during WW2 from Norfolk Virginia to her in Greensboro North Carolina. This is one of hundreds of letters that my mother inherited when my great grandmother passed in 2019. When reading this series of letters it gives you a glimpse of what life was like during that time. In the letter my great grandfather writes about how he made $1 an hour doing a side job in the navy and he spoke about how that would be good pay if you could work a lot, which puts into perspective how times were back then. My great grandfather was not drafted into the war but had pride in his country and enlisted into the Navy at around 18-19. This set a precedent for his sons moving forward with two of the four enlisting into the military then having on of his grandsons making a career out of the Coast Guard.
This collection of love letters from my great grandparents went on throughout the duration of his time in the Navy and it is something that my family holds very dearly. My great grandfather, Wilbur, passed away in 1986 at only 60 years of age so the letters became even more meaningful to my great grandmother, Mary Ann, as she would go back time and time again to read them. And she read them to her grandchildren to show how they fell in love and managed him being gone as a young couple. This has given the following generations a better understanding of who my great grandparents were and how deep their love for each other and their country
