Admiring my beaded lapis lazuli necklace, a family heirloom from Afghanistan, its celestial blue slightly dimmed and gold plating showing signs of wear. Originally my paternal grandmother's, now passed down to me, it symbolizes resilience. My parents, immigrants from war-torn Afghanistan, faced challenges but thrived. Despite setbacks, my father started a gemstone business, embracing his roots. The necklace, like my family, formed under pressure, echoes the untapped potential of Afghanistan, challenging stereotypes. While a reminder of sacrifices, it also signifies the endless possibilities in America.
