Lantern
The thing that glows in this picture is called a "lantern". It is a delicate work of art made of red paper and is usually used to celebrate major festivals such as the Chinese New Year. It symbolizes reunion, wishes for the safety of the family and creates a festive atmosphere.
Whenever I think of where my ancestors left off, this Lantern becomes a link to my hometown. The culture of these objects bears witness to the arduous path of immigrants and how they pass on their own culture in a foreign land.I first learned about this Lantern because my family's grandparents introduced it to us over dinner, and they wanted to continue to pass on this traditional culture.
