La Virgen de Guadalupe
My mom was twenty when she decided to move to the U.S. in 1969. She was brought here by the influence of her husband, who at the time was living in the U.S. Leaving behind her beloved hometown of Zacatecas in Mexico, she was sure to bring the one item of significance with her on her travels: her religion. The photo displayed is a photo of my mom’s sacred Virgin Mary statue which resides in her bedroom drawer. Every night, my mom stands in front of the Virgin Mary and prays to her before bed. My mom has always emphasized her love for God and most importantly her love for the Virgin Mary. Primarily known as “la Virgen de Guadalupe” or “Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe” in Mexican culture, the Virgin Mary portrays a far more devoted religious figure that represents Mexican nationality and identity.
When moving to the U.S., my mom did not choose to live in America but became impelled by marital reasons. After her divorce, she was motivated to reside in the U.S. for better employment opportunities. With two jobs, my mom was influenced to remain in the U.S. so that she could provide her children with higher educational opportunities, leading to a better future. Unlike the people of Mexico who assimilated to American religion or Christianity, my mom disregarded Americanization and continued to practice her traditional ways, especially remaining loyal to her faith and worshiping of the Virgin Mary.
