My great-grandmother, Angele Jerro, came here from Syria in 1920 at the age of 11. She had four brothers. Their father died in 1915, leaving them poor, so in the US they had to start their own shoe business, Jerro Brothers, from scratch. By the 1940s they were pretty wealthy, making shoes for celebrities. These shoes were made for Carmen Miranda, though they were never worn. I suppose my family has kept them for novelty’s sake. It’s entertaining to see something so flamboyant that came from my relatives’ business, one they started from the ground up.
