Irene’s Story
I am a Mexican-American latina born and raised in Orange County, California U.S. My mother is a immigrant from Guanajuato, Mexico, and my father is an immigrant from San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Both of my parents were born and raised in small towns in Mexico, where resources were scarce, and where there was a lack of employment opportunities. My parents both came to the United States as teens, they assimilated fairly fast, learned the language, and hustled. Thanks to their bravery and willingness to build a future in the United States my brother and I had a very different upbringing, and a opportunity to develop academically and professionally in ways my parents could not. Growing up my favorite cultural customs were food, jewelry, and extracurricular activities. All of this has kept me close to my culture, and grounded to my roots. I am proud of where I come from, and I look forward to sharing it with those around me.
