Hongbao are red envelopes that you receive during special holidays (mainly Chinese new year and weddings) that carry money inside of them. Normally it's either $20 dollars or some Chinese money that is kinda useless in America. The purpose of a hongbao is to wish you a good life and happiness (and that's why you get it once a year). Everybody who is Chinese or has Chinese in them has received at least 10 hangbaos in their lives (you get multiple when you or born and you get 1 or 2 as the years go on).
