My object is these camels that were handmade for my grandma in Dubai about 25 years ago. She gifted them to me when I was a little kid. They are more than just souvenirs because they also represent my grandma’s past life. She had these specifically made by local people, handmade, which made them special. Years later, in 2015, she gave them to me. This made them feel more personal and valuable to me. These camels are also connected to my identity because my background comes from both my family and from America. Showing how being American can mean having family traditions while still being part of American society. This story connects to migration in U.S. history because many people have brought parts of their culture with them. Different types of traditions, objects, and stories can be passed down. My camels represent how a part of my culture comes from another part of the world, which is meaningful to an American family. These camels represent more than their physical appearance. They remind me of my grandma and my family’s background. They also show how you can be American and still appreciate your family’s background and identity.
