Handkerchief from Norway
It was a monday, and my grandma was coming over to teach me and my little sister our instruments. When she entered the door, there was a quick breeze of cold, brisk air from the winter afternoon, and it seemed to claw at the door. After my grandma got situated she wanted to talk to me. She said, “This was my grandfather's handkerchief from Norway, and now it is yours." The handkerchief was white, and opaque, and smelled of old cloth. She told me that he had brought a few things from Norway while immigrating with his family to the US, and the handkerchief was one of them. His family had immigrated in the late 1800s, as he had family in the US previously that hosted for them making it thousands of times easier for them to get into the US. This family had moved all over the country, searching for jobs before settling in Minnesota. I really feel connected to this as this is one of the only things that I have to look into my family's past. I have it to this day, and use it with my trombone to clean it. I truly feel connected to it.
