Hamsa Necklace

Group:

A bat mitzvah is an initiatory ceremony recognizing a girl as a Jewish women in the community. I heard a knock on my door as I was mentally preparing myself for my big day. As I was walking out of my room with my dress and heels on, and hair and makeup done, my mother came into my room and she handed me the necklace. As she gives me the necklace she explained its importance and she said, “This necklace was passed down from your grandmother to me, and now me to you on your special day.” I knew that this necklace could only bring me the best and luck. Moreover, becoming a bar or bat mitzvah is a very important day in the Jewish religion because it is the day you become an adult in the Jewish community. The necklace is in the shape of a hamsa. In the Jewish religion the hamsa is recognized as a symbol of protection. In addition, there is a tree of life: it’s significant because it represents new beginnings, growth, positive energy, good health and strength. Although I have experienced so many life changing events and gifts in my life, they are unlike and do not compare to the experience I had on this day and the necklace I got on this milestone and accomplishment. This piece of jewelry constantly reminds me of my Jewish identity, my ancestors, and where I come from. My Jewish identity is a big part of my life and one of the things that shaped me into who I am today. Being Jewish means a lot to me because we are not only a minority but unfortunately victims of anti-Semitism. Furthermore, this necklace symbolizes my strength and pride in my religion and being a Jewish woman.
