Great grandfathers talit
My great grandfathers talit is an object in my family. A tallit is a fringed garment worn as a prayer shawl by religious Jews. It means a lot to my family because my great grandfather, my dads father, was a rabbi in the military and enlisted in world war 2 to serve as a chaplain. His name was Carl Isaac Miller. He thereafter became a rabbi at temple israel in gary indiana. This artifact means so much because it shows how religion can be an influence in hard times like world war two. It was so important especially during the holocaust that Judaism continued and jewish people in the military were able to practice their faith while defending the country. It is also significant to my father. Towards the end of my great grandfather’s life he had strokes which led to him being not able to talk and eventually he passed away. This talit is a way to honor his memory and the things he cared about. A cool part about the talit is that in addition to all the jewish components on the talit, it also had an army insignia on it. This is also cool because it makes the talit rare and special. I hope that this talit is kept in good condition and well treated so that my great grandfather’s memory is preserved and people will remember his good deeds, heart, and dedication to his people. This to me is my family's most important and historic artifact.
