My Oma came to the United States in 1946. She and my Opa had fled from Germany. Chicago became the home for my grandparents. They took their time to learn English, and they came to love the United States, it was really a home to them. However, both of my grandparents still felt very German, and missed much of their culture they had grown up with. My Oma was eventually sent, and bought, her own German folk and orchestral music on vinyl records around the 1950s and 1960s. These records brought sounds into my grandparents' home that allowed them to feel at home in more ways than one.
