This bible comes from my great-great-great grandfather's nephew when him and his family immigrated from Berlaburg, Westfalen, Germany to the US. We are not sure the exact date it came but since my great-great-great grandfather came in 1886 we assume it's around that time. They left Germany because they were being drafted and could've had to serve in a war and since they were Mennonite they were anti-violence. They came to the US through New York and stayed out east for a short time but eventually settled in Amana, Iowa. This was a shared community whete nobody owned any land it was all shared. Many Mennonite people lived there and still do. Now almost all my extended family lives in small towns near Amana, Iowa or has moved to bigger cities in Iowa but still near to where they came from. I like having this bible in my house because it reminds me of ancestors, what they went through, and where they came from and where I'm from.

Place(s): Amana, Iowa; Berlaburg, Westfalen, Germany
