When my mother was a child, she would sit with her grandmother and look at one of her prized possessions. It was a small maroon photo album containing pictures of family members going back to the Civil War. My mom was the only one of her nine cousins who would listen to their grandma’s stories about their crazy relatives. One day, my mom asked her how she had gotten the album and was told that her great-great-grandmother passed it to her grandmother when she died. My mom considered this for a second, then asked her grandmother if she could be the one to have it next. My great-grandmother laughed and laughed, and fifteen years later my mom got the photo album. She keeps it in the safe so it can stay preserved for the next time she misses her grandmother and for the next generation of grandchildren who take the time to listen.
