Gathered family recipes

These papers have been shaped and collected over many years, they have stains of foods spilled from many hands, they have ideas formed by many minds. So abstract when put on the paper but so welcoming as people walk through the door with open hearts. My family and I host every second Sunday of the month and we use these recipes that we've gathered. People often ask where these meals are from and how they could make them themselves. They vary between curries and sweets and this represents me well, part of me is Egyptian while the other is Dutch. The food we eat brings all of me together. I hear the bubbling pot and a pop from the toaster and I'll know we're having some kind of soup. I smell the sweet batter and I'll know we're having Dutch crêpes. I see my dad grabbing random ingredients and throwing them together with no recipe and I'll know it's his amazing Egyptian Ful that only he knows how to make.  When anyone comes over I urge them to try Ful. We describe it as a type of bean paste with tomatoes, parsley, and a whole lot of seasonings. We eat it with warm pita bread and grab it with our hands. It means a lot to me to be able to share my culture through food. Recipes show a deep connection to the story of my family, and I appreciate being able to share it with others.
