Galo de Barcelos

My grandfathers on both of my parents' sides of my family along with my mom’s mom are all immigrants from different parts of Portugal. My mom’s parents both moved with their families when they were teenagers, my grandpa from the mainland and my grandma from the Azores, but my dad’s dad moved to the U.S. when he was 11 with only his older sister. After they left the island they were from, Madeira, they lived in Rhode Island together where my great-aunt practically raised my grandpa. This story led to my whole family calling this aunt mãe because it means mother in Portuguese. The picture I added is of two rooster statues that I got when I was in Maderia. The Galo de Barcelos is considered to be a symbol of luck and pretty much everyone in my family has at least one somewhere in their house.
