Flan
Flan is a traditional Dominican dessert me and my family eat. The first memory I think of when I see or hear Flan is my grandmother because she makes it every Thanksgiving for dessert, and every time she makes it better and better! Not just thanksgiving she makes it but also special occasions even my birthday. My grandma put her love, sweat, and tears into her delicious flan.
The ingredients you need for flan is one cup of sugar, 5 large eggs, 1 can of condensed milk, 1 can of evaporated milk, and one tbsp of vanilla extract. To make the Flan you melt 1 cup of sugar in a pan over medium heat until golden brown. Pour into your baking dish and let it harden. Next you blend 5 eggs, one can of condensed milk, 1 can of evaporated milk, and 1 tbsp of vanilla until smooth. Pour through a strainer over the hardened caramel. Then you put your dish inside a larger pan filled halfway with hot water. Bake at 350 *F for 1 hour until slightly jiggly. Finally, cool it down, refrigerate for 4+ hours, run a knife around the edges, and then the fun part is flipping it onto the plate!
Overall, Flan is important to my family and me because it reminds me of our culture and how we celebrate it. We eat flan at every family reunion or celebration. Even on family members' birthdays we eat Flan, including mine. I feel like it's an important part of us and signifies who me and my family are.
