Fejiao Troperio is a dish made with pork, cassava flour, onions, collard greens and eggs. It has a salty taste with a mix that makes you wonder how people came up with something that feels so right. One Thanksgiving, I was eating Feijao Troperio and realized we weren't eating the traditional American food. I was left thinking about it all night and on to the next day. At recess the following day, I asked my friends about what they had eaten. I realized something important that I still remember to this day. All the people that had their immigration story lost in their family ate the typical American food. All the people that were still connected to their immigration usually ate their cultural food. I went home to ask about Feijao Troperio and my mom said it was a Brazilian dish. I asked more about my culture and found out my father was an immigrant. Every time I eat Pão de Queijo (a brazilian cheese bread) or Feijao Troperio, I am reminded that I am connecting with my culture and that America is only America because of the endless cultures and traditions.
