Family necklace
Relationship:
Grandchild of im/migrant
This necklace first belonged to my grandmother, who carried it with her when she came to the United States from Dominican Republic. It was given to her as a gift from someone in her town church and she always said it would be passed down to the first born granddaughter. When I moved to the U.S., it was given to me, representing the change we both went through from living in DR to U.S..It’s more than a family heirloom, it shows my families history of migration and the ways cultural identity is carried into new places.
