Family Artifact Hanukkiah
This was my grandmother's hanukkiah that she used when she was a young girl in London during WWII. As the story goes, her father bought this hanukkiah from a local Jewish merchant in London before the war started. She tells stories of bombs going off right around her house while the hanukkiah was lit during the war. She has early memories of the Hanukkah during the war, staring at the candles burning in this hanukkiah. During the worst part of the bombings her entire family left London and moved to High Wickham. Her family used this hanukkiah for as long as she can remember, and it was a very important part of her life. This hanukkiah was with her for as long as she could remember. When she was 18 she and her mother migrated to the United States. They only brought very little including one suitcase each and this hanukkiah. My father only remembers this hanukkiah being lit during his childhood every year during Hanukkah. It is now a part of our house and we light it every year. One day I will pass it to my children. As of today it is estimated to be around 100 years old.
