Maldonado Thanksgiving Party

This picture holds deep personal significance for me, especially as the first child in an immigrant family. As a Guatemalan-American, I am proud of my heritage, shaped by the sacrifices my parents made when they left Guatemala for a better life in the U.S. The struggles they faced have influenced who I am today. The photo symbolizes not just a moment in time but the unbreakable bonds of family and heritage, and the importance of staying connected to our roots. The Maldonado family has a tradition of traveling to Port Chester, where we reunite, share stories, and celebrate. These gatherings go beyond being social events—they allow us to stay connected across generations, preserving the spirit of family and shared history. Without my great-grandparents and grandfather, who laid the foundation for this tradition, we wouldn’t be the close-knit family we are today. Many older members of the community still remember my great-grandparents and grandfather with fondness and respect. While this picture captures a joyful reunion, it also reminds me of those who couldn’t make it. Our family is large and spread across the world, yet the bond between us remains strong. If I were to compare our family to an animal, it would be the rabbit family—always expanding and ensuring our connection remains vibrant. This picture reflects the unity and love at the core of our Guatemalan-American identity and serves as a reminder of the strength that comes from our roots and shared history.
