Ellis Island Name Book
On my dad’s side of the family, we hold dear our Italian and Irish heritage. My dad’s mom’s grandmother came to America from Ireland at age twelve and my Grandma’s grandpa came to America from Italy at age fourteen. They both came to America and went through Ellis Island to get here. My Grandma’s Grandpa came from Casola, Caserta, Italy. My Grandma did a lot of research into our family’s genealogy and was able to find a lot of our family’s ancestry and was able to find their names in the book that everyone signs when they come to Ellis Island. My Grandma did more digging once she found this and found a distant cousin that lives in Massachusetts today. She got into contact with him and met him when she went to Massachusetts because that’s where my Grandma was born and raised. He told my Grandma more about her Grandpa and she learned he was a builder when he came to America. Generation to generation all the boys in the family were builders because of my Grandma’s Grandpa. My Grandma and Grandpa traveled to Italy to meet the rest of my Grandma’s distant relatives. They were able to visit the town her Grandpa grew up in and learned many stories from the past. It is truly incredible that my own family went through Ellis Island to get here and they went through all the struggles we learn about in class today.
