My object is an egg beater that my great great grandparents (Pito and his wife) brought with them when they left their small town outside of Naples, Italy. They both arrived in New York City in 1980s. They settled in Brooklyn which was a city at that time only because they had a lot more opportunities over here to start a new life in a new country.At the beginning starting a new life was difficult because they had to learn a new way of life and speak a new language. Surprisingly, they felt good about their new lives as well. It was like a lot of mixed feelings that they went through at the same time. They loved to cook and found it useful when they started making a lot of different kinds of food for themselves and the neighborhood. The object is about a century old and the egg beater is a metal. It has an handle and you can turn the handle with one hand and you need to hold the top with the other. My great great grandparents made delicious pastries, cakes and other desserts and food items in Italy and then in Brooklyn once they arrived here. They had a great time cooking a lot of different things. Can you imagine my excitement to know that such an item was passed down from so long ago and now my family has it? Now, we follow the tradition of our ancestors and make several different dishes using this very same cooking tool! Now we sit together to share stories and eat that we make with this egg beater!
