Delftware
This piece of delftware was given to my mother as a wedding present by a family member. It contains my mother and father's name. It is important to my mother for it reminds her of her home country of The Netherlands and the support of her family. My mother grew up in a rural, conservative community; thus, moving to the United States was a big ordeal for her and the entire family. Neither my father nor the community my mother was going to was Dutch. Thus, the plate both demonstrated the support of my mother's family but also serves as a little reminder of her beloved homeland.
Not only is delftware in itself an art-form very much associated with Dutch culture, but also the scene in the middle of a sailboat and windmill is typical of the Dutch countryside.
