This needlework was created by Mary Amilie Elinor Ørnshoj, my great-great-grandmother, in 1949. She was born in 1892, in Aalborg, Denmark. Mary learned to knit at a young age, and she enjoyed it. She was married in 1916 to Hjalmar Christian Knakkergaard. (I was given my middle name from his middle name, and he was named after King Christian IX.) Mary and her family moved to to New York in October, 1922. In 1947, she contracted tuberculosis, and had to stay in a hospital for a few weeks. During her recovery period, she began sewing this needlework. She finished it in 1949 while her daughter and grandchildren were living with her. Her son-in-law was sick in the hospital at that time.
