In the 1920s, my great grandparents on my mom's side, Daniel and Nora, both immigrated here from Ireland. My great grandmother was from Spiddal, Ireland and my great grandfather was from Cork, Ireland. They both immigrated to the United States when they were 16 years old (1921). They met on the ship that they came to the United States on. They eventually got married and moved to Norwood, MA and had 5 children. Nora worked as a maid in Norwood and Daniel worked at the Readville T-station and was a night warden during World War II. Although I never met them, as they passed away before I was born, I have heard many stories about them from my grandmother. She tells me about how they lost their home in Norwood during The Great Depression when my grandma was a child, and had to move into a rental house. She also told me that they only had one car, which had to be manually started by spinning a giant lever in front of the hood. She told me that her mother had a very tough time dealing with the language barrier as she only spoke Irish at the time, and how she and her father both struggled to keep themselves afloat during The Great Depression.
