Crocheted Stockings
My Great-Grandmom Mary Humlhanz came to the United States from Czechoslovakia when she was three years old. Her family settled in Philadelphia right at the turn of the century. Mary's mother taught her to knit and crochet, skills that she passed down to my mother when she was a little girl. When Mary died in 1993, we, her great-grandchildren, inherited some of the decorative arts she had made during her life. Many of the pieces were made for the holidays or to adorn tables during large family dinners. My mom handed down these three Christmas stockings, stockings that used to hang on my mantle as a little girl, and we now use them for our three young children when we celebrate Christmas in Rye, NY. When I look at them, I think of my great-grandmother and of her family making the journey to the United States so many years ago.
