Cornbread Dressing Recipe
My family item is my great-great-grandmother Weist's cornbread dressing recipe. This cornbread dressing recipe has been passed down from generation to generation in our family. Great-great-grandmother Weist developed this recipe when she was a young wife and mother starting to host Thanksgiving dinner. After many years of perfecting this delicious tradition, great-great-grandmother Weist finally deemed it good enough to be passed down. She soon began to teach her daughters and daughter-in-laws her sacred recipe, eventually making its way down to me. Since I’ve been given this recipe, I have made it many times for my family on Thanksgiving. It has become a fun tradition for me and has helped me connect with my family heritage. Dressing, or referred to by some as stuffing, can be found in the De re Coquinaria, a well-known cookbook written by a Roman chef named Apicius. This is one of the oldest cookbooks known to exist. Although we are not certain of our ancestors' exact or detailed descent, we are certain they enjoyed cooking and eating food together. Crafting a meal from scratch is a tradition that has occurred in my family for many years. There have been several cookbooks with handwritten notes passed through generations, detailing family favorites or flops, but those are just a few of the many traditions that my family passed down. For many, this dish remains popular because to most people it’s more than a dish; it’s a tradition, a legacy, and a way to bring everyone a little closer on the holidays.
