Coral earrings and ring
This set of jewelry came to the United States with my nonna when she was emigrating from Italy. In 1955, she came to the Bronx at the age of fifteen to start a new life with her direct family and other family members who were already here. Her voyage by boat here was extremely challenging and it consisted of many stops including Barcelona, Spain and other places in Europe. The earrings and the ring are made of Italian coral and gold plated metal and have been passed down to my mom and then passed down to me. This artifact is important because it reminds my family and I where we come from and the tradition of passing down items in our family. Every time I wear the earrings or ring I get to be reminded of my nonna’s hard journey here for the sake of giving our family better opportunities and a new life.
