This object is a part of a tradition that has been in my family for a long time. It might look like an ordinary coin but it has been one that has been passed down through generations, from my grandparents to my parents and now to me and who knows who started it. During Chinese new year eve my family puts this coin into a dumpling. Then my parents make more dumplings that look identical but don't have the coin in it. After that, my parents call in everyone to eat and everyone picks a bowl that has dumplings in it. Whoever gets the dumpling that has the coin in it is considered the lucky one. They are believed to be blessed with luck and the best wishes for the upcoming year. This object, like my mom, said, “helps show the importance of family during hard times.” After immigrating to the US my parents don't have the ability to go back to China very often, and because of that, this tradition has brought them a sense of a connection to China and their parents. This item is also important to me because it shows the importance of family and helps me learn about my heritage.
