Chiva bus
My mother came to the United States from Bogota, Colombia in 1984 after marrying my father who is from Washington D.C. She attended graduate school at Georgetown University, knowing very little English. After working very hard for many years she brought over the rest of her family to America. My Colombian immediate family now fortunately lives nearby in Maryland.
The model in this picture is of a Chiva bus, or an artisan bus used in Colombia for public transportation through rural and mountainous areas. These buses are typically painted with bright colors and contain many decorations. When I visited Colombia a few years ago, we bought this model after riding in a Chiva bus through the mountains in Colombia. We drove through a very poor area where children were hopping on the bus trying to hitch a ride wearing hardly any clothes. I chose this object because it reminds me of the diversity of Colombia and how hard it was for my mother to not only immigrate to the United States, but to bring her whole family here. This bus reminds me of my mother's dedication and work ethic and I admire her so much for it.
