This charm necklace was given to me by my grandparents when I was born. In Chinese culture, it is typical for grandparents to give jewelry to their grandchildren when they are born as a means to"tie the baby to the world." The center piece is made of gold and has a picture of a snake. It is significant because I was born in the year of the snake. Surrounding the gold center piece is a jade stone. Jade is a valued stone in Chinese culture because it is a symbol of goodness, preciousness and beauty.
