Cash Register
My great grandfather was named Robert Fink. Robert moved to the US when he was 17 to fight in World War II. The move to the US was because he was told “you can not fight unless you are 18” by the Irish military. After the dark days of war were over he settled in Marshfield,Wisconsin. Settling in Wisconsin felt like sunshine after rain. Robert became a treasure for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). One day, the VFW got a brand new cash register for their bar. Robert seized the opportunity to take the old one as a keepsake. The register was a fixture in the family basement, the keys providing entertainment to multiple grandchildren. The clanking sound of the keys brings you back to pre technology simplicity. Its time worn keys and patinaed metal give off a cold exterior, but the ding of the drawer opening holds warm childhood memories for my father. His wife, Fern, gave this cash register to our family so if we ever started our own restaurant we could use it there.
