Carl Worner Saloon Bottle
Carl Worner was a folk artist in the Midwest during the late 1800s into the 1900s. He created scenes inside bottles often of saloons or other businesses. His most famous were his Saloon Bottles with a “Find the Missing Man” sign. My dad tells me that he would use these bottles often in exchange for a place to stay while he created them. My great-great-great grandparents immigrated from Germany and owned a tavern in Milwaukee in the late 1800s. Carl Worner offered a bottle in exchange for a room to stay. He then gifted them their own Saloon Bottle with my great-great-great grandparents inside. At the top it reads Mike Bertling, my great-great-great grandpa's name. This has been passed down through generations and is now my dad’s. It’s been so interesting to learn about as it is a part of our family’s story.
