Caretas
Caretas are special masks from different parts of the Caribbean like Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, where my family is from. The masks are horned and very colorful. They have been used in many Dominican festivals for years, an important character in many of these celebrations is the Vejigante, a trickster or prankster whose role it is to entertain the spectators. My family has played this role in the Dominican Day Parade here in New York for many years now. My family values these masks very much because it is one of the few things that tie them back to their roots. In America, Dominican Republic is not recognized as much as some other countries may be. These masks are a symbol of Dominican spirit and represent where my family comes from. They are very proud to be Dominican and love wearing these masks to celebrate their culture.
